The Entrance - Lakes Entrance

Before this man made entrance was cut the natural entrance to the lakes would be blocked by sand in times of low flow, a later strong flow would cause the lake to create a new entrance further along the coast. When the river trade developed a safe, navigable entrance was required.

The accommodation at Goldsmith's in the forest is near the top of the North arm of the lake, where the granite was loaded onto the barges to complete its journey to the newly dug entrance.

Walk to the Entrance

Lakes Entrance

Across the footbridge, then 2.4 Km along the track through the Banksia woodland to the entrance. The sheltered track winds through the centre of the barrier that separates Lakes Entrance from Bass Strait. Bell birds, whip birds, wattlebirds and crimson rosellas can often be seen or heard on the walk. The sandy track with steps, boardwalk and lookouts takes about one hour to walk quickly out and back or gently stroll and allow two hours with a return along the lake side, if the tide is low, or the ocean side if it is not too windy. There should also be time to look out for seals or dolphins which are often seen in the entrance.
